When they stepped out of the airdock, it was a different Belport that greeted Daniel to the one he'd come to know.
Of course, he'd spent the past two days helping with the healing effort in Amedra and he'd seen the Old Docks before the cleanup started so he knew what to expect... but still, it was surreal. Familiar buildings were burnt and crumbled; where colourful facades once lined the streets, makeshift tents now perched like barnacles on what skeletal supports remained in the rubble. The typically raucous buzz of activity had become wrapped in a sombre focus as people picked up what was left of their city. Though parts of the Old Docks had been more thoroughly razed, the extent of the destruction in Belport was wider.
Daniel pulled Daeris towards him as their fellow airship passengers dispersed around them. "The Regent should be at the City Hall. This way," he murmured and squeezed her elbow briefly. For anyone watching, she was now simply a wood elf healer accompanying the Abbot of Cantor thanks to a skin glamour - but she was a traitor in a foreign city, in the midst of the former enemy, and was surely nervous no matter how stoic her face. It was absurb that this was even happening He led her towards their destination as directly as he could, avoiding crowds and pausing only to note how the recovery team had arranged themselves. The next stop after meeting with the Regent would be wherever the healers had set up their base.
And there it was! The shape of the Belport City Hall emerged from behind a set of broken buildings, battered but still intact. His pace quickened as they climbed the steps, and he realised he was more worried about Gideon than he'd thought. Which was a little absurd - official communication had confirmed he was safe, and that the Margrave of Valsk was there too. There really wasn't anything to worry about. There shouldn't be.
