Dimel had been winding his way back to his room from the tea shop when he heard the commotion. He didn't think much of it since kids always fought with each other. They squealed and yelled as they always did. It didn't matter if it was a clearly onesided match.
He would have passed it by entirely if it wasn't for the squeaky mewling her heard. There were several caterwauling voices coming from a box carried by the young boy who was the victim in the fight. Suddenly one of the bigger children yanked the box from the boy's hands and threw it into the river.
The water immediately lapped over the edge and he could see one of the kittens get pulled out of the box by the water and pushed down stream. Dimel reacted, rather than pausing to think about the situation. He darted down the river and ran into the shallows to snatch the kitten that was slowly being drowned outside of the box.
Without casting more than a cursory glance, he handed, nearly tossing, the kitten to the nearest human or elf-shaped shadow hoping they'd catch the poor thing.
Loathing to do this, he had to pause to unravel himself from his long scarf and unbuckle his swords. He was lucky they hadn't weighed him down. then tore off the long scarf he had, which had been holding him down and unbuckled his sword. If he could run fast enough he'd be able to jump in just ahead of the box or close enough to it he could swim to it. Yet, the water was so cold he wouldn't have long before he ran the risk of cramps and hypothermia.
