An hour, a whole sixty and something minutes. That was how long they had been in that public bath. "They" being Jushan and Easna, respectively Kiernan's wife -- rather ex-wife, it's complicated, don't ask-- and daughter. Of course, he could have gone in after them but he knew this city well enough to spot the issue without needing to go inside. They had happened to choose a non mixed bathhouse. Which meant that he would have been unable to follow them or see when they would have left in due time. Not to mention, this establishment was a tad out of what he could afford.
So, he had stayed outside, sitting on a bench from where he could observe the entrance without risking detection. All he had to do to appear completely inconspicuous, was to fake to read a book, idly turn the pages from time to time. That was what he thought but the truth was, he was not as discreet as that. It was a small miracle Jushan had not noticed him yet.
Kiernan was stuck with sneaking around and stalking his (ex) wife and daughter because of something he had done. Or rather because of something he had been too spineless to do. Later on, he had managed to renew contact in secret with Easna. Yet, he still did not want to chance a meeting with his wife and risk losing his daughter again.
The reason he was following them today was because Easna had asked him to find a rare book on Enchantments. It so happened that today was the first and last day he had before going back on the sea for at least a couple of months. He was biding his time until an opportune moment arrived, a moment when Easna could sneak away from her mother long enough. Otherwise, it would be a long time before he had another chance.
When they left the bathhouse, Kiernan let them take a dozen meters or so of lead. He did not want them to spot him but he did not want to have them leave his sights. Of course, because of that somewhat short distance, he repeatedly had to duck or almost dive behind a pillar or a market stall to avoid being seen. And it took all his attention to do so. After strolling for a while, the pair settled in a park with trees providing a light cover against the glaring sun of this morning and a pond where ducks roamed in peace.
Kiernan couldn't go through the gate. There weren't enough people around to blend among them and the bench where they had sat faced the gate. He remembered that there was another entrance. But, it was on the other side of the park and it would take him a considerable time to go around it all. He made a swift decision and walked along the wall until he found a slightly less populated spot on the outside. He glanced left and right, stuck the book in his belt before he jumped and scrambled his way to the top and over the park wall. He landed softly on the other side, stayed low for an instant then swooped over to a tree from where he could observe Jushan and Easna. He leaned against the tree, using its shade and trunk to remain hidden.
I HOPE THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH /O/
