Caleb knew Sarain's intention was good, and that she wanted to ensure his safety, but if she hadn't mentioned that there was a possibility of falling, he never would've been aware of it. Now a small feeling of fear crept up into his heart. Caleb pushed it down. Now wasn't the time to show any sign of weakness, especially not when he had to climb something this high. Fortunately he wasn't scared of heights, and so the only problem here would be his physical strength and footing during the climb. Following Sarain's instructions, he went first.
Gripping the vines firmly with his hands and using the rock facade to rest his feet on, he started to ascend. His speed wasn't exactly outstanding, and he felt as if he was just slowing them down. Then again, there would be no point to this if he just plummeted to his death. He continued his laborious repetition of the same gesture, trying to regain his footing every time, his heart skipping a beat every time he let go of the vine to take hold of it further up.
A problem was that the vines were rather thin. One couldn't just shimmy up, or the fragile plant would snap. Even the tug from Caleb's arms was enough to put a strong tension in the vines, and he wasn't even pulling on them that much. Hopefully Sarain was doing better. He craned his neck to attempt spotting their destination. They were halfway there.
As Caleb took his next step, the tiny ledge on which his left foot rested gave in without warning. With the sudden increase of weight on the vines, a small section collapsed, dragging him with it. He managed to grab ahold of some vegetation to his left with one arm, and he felt himself slide down as his hand seared with pain. He managed to reassume his stable position when he was almost at Sarain's level.
"A shame Mareus has no power here," he inhaled sharply as he looked at his hand. The pain he felt was now identified as a bright red streak that cut across his palm. Blood was slowly seeping out.
