Playing with the Exothermic Process
Because science

(time set in prewar)

Koben provides a wide variety of raw supplies to be used in industry or more commonly alchemy, all thanks to the hundreds of mines and quarries around the metropolis. Thanks to this access, many businesses revolve around supplying these materials to Koben's ever-growing industrial sectors, but they are not the only customers the business serves. These businesses also have a range in scale, from huge industry suppliers to small stores that caters to individuals.
Many merchants, traders, and foreign alchemists and experimenters come to Koben for rare materials or specialty items only sold in there. More often than not, people are willing to personally travel to Koben for the best price of the materials.

It was late afternoon down in the commercial sector of Koben. Many of the shopkeepers has just begun closing their doors. However, in one general alchemy supply store, a clerk is trying to make an unfair deal with a foreign customer.

"Sorry, Woodsie, that's how much I gotta charge for everything here," the seated clerk said as he rested his apathetic face on his hand on top of the counter he was behind of, "take it or leave it. Plus, we are about to close, so make up your mind, will you?"

Meanwhile, outside running through the streets, Emilie attempts to reach the alchemy store before it closes. "Don't be closed, don't be closed..."

The life of a sailor was never an easy one, nor a very rewarding one. This was especially true when you were of the illegal-looting sort like Videl. But he always had an odd kind of lucky streak, and it seemed now was its time to shine as the woodelf currently found himself with a bag full of coin and a long break on land. It'd be a waste if he didn't take advantage of such a rare moment, which is how he currently wound up in Koben across the counter from a rather...unbearable individual.

"Sir...Sir I am not going anywhere until you actually sell me these things at their proper price." He impatiently tapped the counter near his pile of supplies. And here he was hoping the luck could've held out a little longer. That or it just didn't work against prejudiced store owners. "I've done the calculations and they're at LEAST a quarter less than what you're currently telling me. If I wanted to be ripped off, I would've taken my business down to the little place across the street. Now those prices are ridiculous, have you seen them? But there is no way-" Videl leaned over the counter for emphasis to get a good look at the man. "No WAY that the price of your goods could've jumped that much from the time I saw your advertisement outside to now. So tell me...why do you think it's alright to rip off a poor foreigner? Huh?" Videl bounced back up, hand still on the counter for balance. "And a crippled one at that! How do you sleep at night, dear sir!?" Videl was certainly getting a little carried away in his dramatics. "Here I thought I'd be able to pick up some quality supplies and be on my way but noooo. We're both stuck here because someone won't be reasonable. "

The clerk snorted at the wood elf’s face as he came closer, furrowing his nose. He gave a snide smirk as he backed away and stood from his stool to stare down Videl. “I think you left out the foreigner’s tax out of your little calculation. I’m pretty sure there is one out there in this city, that’s how we keep our precious goods from going outside heh…but I’m no lawyer.” As Videl tried to convince the clerk to come to terms with him by using the “victim card” and the rare “cripple card”, the clerk shrugged his shoulders with the smirk still plastered on to his face, feeling amused. “Look, Elf, I don’t care if you are a cripple. I treat all my customers equally,” he gave an eye roll after a brief laughing snort, leaning back on the wooden shelves behind him with crossed arms, “but unfortunately for you, I gotta slap that tax on your whole purchase. Sounds reasonable to me. I think you just don’t understand how we conduct business here, Woodsie.” The clerk took a look at the supplies, mostly powdered oxidizers, “Besides, why you want so much of those oxidizers? I hope you are not going misuse those. That’s if you agree to buy them of course.”

The front door slammed open with its little hanging bell ringing sporadically. “Ja! I made it!” Emilie had bursted in, throwing her arms down to her knees as she catches her breath. After a second of recollecting herself, the mage looked up to see a customer waiting to check out with the clerk. “Oh! Don’t mind me, just need to pick up some flux and…” Emilie paused after she did a quick scan at what the elf had on the counter, “is that… the last of the powdered titanium?” Emile’s face began to drain white, quickly browsing through the shop’s shelves.

“Sorry Miss,” the clerk said with a more friendly tone, “we had low stock of those today, and Woody here got the last one.” The clerk stood up straight and swiped a jar out from Videl’s pile. “But hey! Woody here might not need it, so you can have the last one!”

Emilie rushed to the counter, stopping next the elf’s right. “Really?! That would be great—,” she turns next to her to look at the other customer’s pile, then at the elf himself, realizing he was missing an arm. The sight of a man without an arm astonished her but refrained herself from mentioning it. “Oh my… are you sure it’s okay?”

"Foreigners tax!? You're adding in a foreigners tax!? " Videl flailed his arm around. "We're within your own borders with me standing right in front of you! You don't need a damn tax on that- you're just making it all up and I for one, do not appreciate it!" Videl groaned, putting his elbow on the counter so he could rest his head in his hand. This was such a mess...not even the cripple excuse was working on this man. Usually he could earn a few guilt points out of that. And now the clerk was prying into things. "What does it matter what I use them for? I need them and I'm not leaving until you lower the damn pri-"

The loud slam of the door caused Videl to jump up,turning on the spot to see who had come in. What a sigh of relief it was when it was just a young girl. Last thing he needed was someone big to come in and side with the clerk. Instead...she was just distracting him. Frustrating, but it gave him time to think of new ways to win this argument. Or would have, if the man hadn't swiped his titanium out of the pile. "H-hey!"

Oh now this man was just being cheeky handing off his stuff to this girl who had nothing to even do with this. "I DO need it thank you very much. But someone is trying to rip me off by jacking up the price! I'm not leaving until you drop that ridiculous tax!"

When the elf insisted on keeping the titanium, the mage felt stunned after thinking about what would come of it. Emilie really needed that titanium powder. She was on a crunch time to finish her project; without this material, she would be set back significantly. But it seems the wood elf also has some immediate problems of his own. Apparently, he was the one keeping the shop open longer than usual. Yet at the same time, the wood elf also has the material she needs. What could he possibility use titanium for? Emilie glances over the wood elf’s pile to form an idea. Powdered oxidizers, other powdered metals…an awful lot of powder. The composition resembles gunpowder but the addition with the metals were strange and unnecessary. After her quick analysis, Emilie refocuses her attention to the dispute between the clerk and the wood elf.

“What tax is he referring to?” Emilie asked the clerk.
“Uh…” the clerk hesitated before answering, “it is a foreigners tax. He must pay a premium if he wants to take these materials out of the state. And think of it as a favor to you, Miss. You look like you really need that titanium, and since the elf will not buy because…reasons….I’ll let you buy it here on the spot!”
Emile’s eyes widen as she focuses her gaze on the titanium. It is true that she really needed the titanium, but it would be wrong if had to take it from a man who is missing an arm and is trying to save money. Although how the clerk described the tax sounded like it has a lot of loopholes. Emilie decides to challenge it, with some hopes of acquiring at least a quarter of the titanium if she succeeds.

“How do you know he’s a foreigner? Did he tell you?” Emilie started off, trying to establish the initial clause of the tax .
“Ye-oh, no…” the clerk scratched behind his ear but replied with confidence, “but he is obviously not from here! He didn’t even deny it!”
It seems he will be sticking with the tax regardless, but Emilie was not done yet. “What if I buy everything myself? That tax shouldn't apply to me since I am from Koben. You should know, I come here once in a while.”
For a second, the clerk felt he has achieved victory, but caught on to Emilie’s plan. “Oh, don’t you dare pull that on me. I won’t sell these then!”
Emilie did not anticipate the clerk to be this stubborn. She spurted out the first thing that came into her head for the sake of replying. “Oh well then…He doesn’t to buy all these oxidizers and…iron…really? I can give him most of this stuff at my University!”

When Emilie spoke, Videl decided to back off. Perhaps if she questioned the tax the man would get nervous and lift it. Or at the very least give Videl another hold in their argument against said tax. This whole ordeal was getting rather ridiculous and he was quickly losing patience. Raiding a ship that HAD these materials was starting to sound like an easier proposition.

Unfortunately the man really wasn't giving an inch. And Videl was quick to jump up again as his Titanium was once more offered for sale. "Hey-! I never said anything about not buying! I just refuse to get ripped off by a racist a-" He had to take a sharp breath, clenching his fist. Couldn't curse...not in front of a lady at least. Especially a helpful one. He let her resume the questioning, poorly masking his agitation by drumming his fingers on the counter.

The longer this went on, the longer it became more evident that the man really didn't want to sell to him at all. What the hell did he have against wood elves? He knew they weren't overly common in Koben, but were things really that bad? He wasn't sure what he would do if other places were just as insufferable as this. But before Videl could carry further with alternate plans the girl offered another solution. Instantly the wood elf perked up.

"Really, now? Well...if that's the case I might not be buying afterall! I'm sure there's no 'foreigners tax' at a University, right miss?" And certainly no racist clerks. What would the man say to that?

The clerk shrugged his shoulders when Emilie gave the alternative. “Fine by me, I am just being deprived of one sale. Nothing too serious.” The tenacity of this man astounded Emilie. She certainly does not want to keep any faulty promises to this stranger so buying everything is most optimal option she has. But Emilie is running out of things to say. Fortunately for her, however, she saved her best arguments for last.

“Serious you say? Then what would happen if you somehow lose a huge portion of your customer base?” Emilie began once more, entering a straight up posture with one arm crossing her torso and another supporting her chin. “If I am not mistaken, many university students, most of which are in my program, come here because of convenience. That why I am here. But you have made it inconvenient for me, or him, to buy anything at all. It would be a shame if I told my colleagues about this experience.”

The clerk broke a sweat. No doubt that the majority of the customers are university students and faculty. That is why the store was set up here. “Well…where else can they go? Like you said, this is the most convenient place for them to go. There are no other places of this quality that they can go to.”

“Actually there is,” Emilie interjects right after he finished, “just a walk down the street and into this alley is a store that has a wider selection and offers the university discounts. Not a lot of people know about it because it’s sort of a secret—it’s how I get ahead of the class sometimes—but I am willing to share it.” Hearing about this competition stunned his face. He knew about that store; this store has been undermining it for quite some time, but it would explain why he does not have to restock the more expensive materials so often. And discounts? Unheard of! But customers would instantly flock to any where that even gives 5 percent. The clerk face scrunched up as he heavily inhaled.
“You know, fine,” he forcefully exhaled, “buy these. Just don’t speak of that place to your classmates.” The clerk glanced over to the wood elf and pouts. “And I will consider…changing some policies to ensure this doesn’t happen again…I would have been home by now if it wasn’t for this “misunderstanding”.

“Great!” Emilie emptied out her pockets for all the coins she had—been barely enough to pay for everything—and gave a shaky smile. “I’ll be seeing you again some other time, ja?” She is not so sure if the elf feels the same way though. Emilie took half of the elf’s stuff, intentionally bringing the titanium with her and gestured her head to the elf to follow her out of the store.

After walking away from the store to the street corner, the mage stopped under an electric lamppost, which has just begun to light up. The sun hides under the buildings to the west and orange and purple gradients across the cloud streaked sky. Emilie leaned her back on the lamppost, staring into the humming light. “Jeez, that was rough…but at least you got your stuff!” She brought her head back down, looking at the sealed jar of powdered titanium, sighing out softly. “Oh, by the way…what do you need the titanium powder for? Just wondering…”

The man didn't even blink at that. No twitch of the mouth or glare or anything. Videl was at least hoping for SOME kind of reaction to his statement but the man wasn't even giving him THAT. Ugh, how could one store clerk be so frustrating?!

But lucky him, Emilie wasn't done. Slowly he watched the man start to sweat at the mention of more customers turning away. And then the mention of another store came up. Slowly Videl's grin came back, mostly now due to the growing discomfort before the man finally gave in to defeat.

"See that you do. Absolute pleasure doing business with you sir."

That statement was coated in sarcasm as Videl took what Emilie didn't and followed on after her to the lamppost.

"Thank you for the help, miss. I might still be stuck there arguing with the man if it weren't for you. Honestly, I didn't expect him to be so stubborn. I heard these areas were a tad unfriendly to elves, but I had absolutely no idea. Hopefully he won't be doing that again, although he can consider my business lost. Oh--before I forget!"

Videl looked down to the stuff in his hand and rolled his eyes. Well he couldn't pawn all this stuff on her so down he went to set it on the ground and squirm around for his wallet. He pulled it out, using his knees to hold it while he retrieved the amount needed.

"And a little extra in there too. Not enough for that 'foreigners tax', but I consider it fair exchange for helping me."

He held it out to her while flashing the biggest smile he could. And oh-? She was asking him about the titanium powder. Right, right she needed that too didn't she?

"Bit of an experiment of mine! See, I work with explosives. Dangerous business, do not recommend--and I got a little curious how things would work if I played around with the composition a bit. Titanium is an excellent fuel. Hot--but I've heard it produces a wonderful color. Can't remember if it's a silver or a red...but that is what experiments are for, right? You're a student so you must understand. Though I imagine your experiments are far more safe! No risk of it taking a limb, eh?" Goodness the woodelf sure liked to hear himself talk.

"Videl, by the way. We haven't properly exchanged names."

“Oh, it’s not a problem. Glad to help any way I can. Some people are like that here with certain elves.” When the elf interrupted himself, Emilie watches the wood elf fumbled around for his wallet. She considered offering a hand but the elf seems like he has a handle on the task. Once handed the money, Emilie took the amount she paid for and left the extra in his hand. “No need to give me anymore, especially after all that effort for preventing you from paying more than you should,” she stashes the money into her pocket, and then she suddenly froze. She groaned as she face palmed, wiping her hand down to her chin. “I didn’t get what I was supposed to get…” she sighs, shrugging her shoulders, “well at least it wasn’t that important. Although…all I would ask for is to have some of that titanium.”

Speaking of titanium, the elf began to explain his intended use for it. The unknown experiment of the wood elf made Emilie curious. When he first said explosive that did not surprise Emilie a whole lot since she did had a look at his materials. It’s still very curious though, despite his stating how dangerous it is. The moment he said the titanium was for fuel caused Emilie to raise a brow and squint an eye. Indeed, titanium gets very hot, but to use it as a fuel sounded shocking, extremely costly, and wasteful. Once the elf explained the color effect, it made more sense why he has other metals. It all pointed to one thing.

“So…you want to make fireworks, is that it?” Emilie cannot think of another reason why he would want color in explosives. She thought about the nature of fireworks. It’s fascinating how something so whimsical and fun also share properties and of destructive devices. Emilie focused on the whimsical and fun side of fire works and applied it to the elf, making her think of him being an adult experimenter while having a mind of a child. The thought made her giggle, but later remembered that she was the same too, making her giggle more! Her short trance broke when the elf introduced himself.

“Oh, yes, of course,” Emilie was about to hold out her arm to shake hands when she narrowly dropped Videl’s stuff that she was still holding in between her arms. After the brief stumble, she gave a sheepish smile but bright, “Opps…well then…My name is Emilie. Nice to meet you Videl! So tell me more about what you want to experiment.”

The mage gestured to Videl to keep walking as the sky grew darker and more of the electric lamps flicker on.

'Certain elves'. Videl had tried to avoid the politics of it with a vague mentioning of all elves, but the girl had not been quite as delicate. Still, hearing it confirmed didn't make it any less strange to experience. Good thing nothing brought him off the shores of The Empire often.

Videl just let out a sigh and pocketed the extra money he had pulled out, giving a light shrug there on the ground.

"Well, if you're positively sure...you still have my gratitude." And now a bit of guilt as he realized his little drama had distracted her out of her supplies. "Ah--sorry that was completely my fault. What exactly were you looking for?"

Titanium came across loud and clear from earlier, but she was asking again. She must have really needed it. Or was simply helping as a way to get it from him now. "What do you need titanium for? Just curious~" He played it off with a smile and lighthearted tone before attempting to gather up the supplies he'd put down next to him.

Girl was rather quick though, and Videl simply lit up when she mentioned fireworks. "Exactly! Or I guess play around with the components of fireworks and see what sorts of things I can make with it. Seemed like a nice change of pace to make something flashy rather than powerful. " She was giggling so that had to be somewhat of a good sign that he was at least amusing her. And now he had a name from her too.

"Emilie, rather pretty name."

The woodelf tightened his hold on his supplies before following after. If he had to guess she was probably leading him to her University to properly split the titanium. Maybe he could pick up an extra powder or two out of this. But for that to happen, he had to keep up the pleasant air.

"Oh...I guess for the moment just play around with colors and sparks. Unlike you, I don't have the good fortune of a school or books for reference so I'll be going off pure trial and error recording any little thing that I see. And hopefully not lose anything in the process. I highly doubt I'll discover anything ground breaking with this little collection but the more I get to know how each thing reacts the more I can do with it later, right?" He sure was quite the optimist.

Emilie’s eyes glistens when Videl asked what she was doing. Lately, Emilie has been very excited about her project since she is almost done. “Okay! So…” she spoke with enthusiasm, “I’ve been working on this engine that I designed and the titanium is needed to reinforce some vital parts. Once I infuse the titanium, I should be able to test the engine as early as tonight!” Thinking about the prospect made her all giddy.

Hearing Videl saying her name was pretty made Emilie blush. She turned away to look at the lamps to hide the fact. Videl then started talking about his lack of resources. Emilie did not know why Videl brought up the comparison. He made it sound like he was at a disadvantage—although he is missing an arm—in terms academic material and even humbled himself with the idea of being unable to discover new things.

“Hey, no need to say those things,” Emilie dismisses Videl’s self-humbling words, but the mage did not like how the wood elf assumed she relied on books and school for her work. “Sure, being in school and books do help, but that doesn’t mean I don’t experiment. If I followed strictly what the school and books say, I might as well be fixing old steam engines rather than trying to develop new ones.” She sighs after explaining herself. “Und ja, learning from your experiments is the most important thing you can get out of them. Discovering is great and all, but it’s a bad priority to have I believe.”

They reach the university but Emilie led Videl around the campus perimeter to a beaten path on the side. No lamps or lights were installed along the path with the exception of one dim crystal lamp suspended next to a wooden post at the base of the path.

“Okay, we’re almost at the workshops. You can stay for a while if you want to work on your fireworks here. There is also an open field next to the workshops so you can also test them out too!” Emilie walked up to the lamp and stuck out a hand, while trying to hold Videl’s materials. With a sweeping hand gesture, the lamp brightens and reveals the wire the lamp hanging from. When a push gesture, the lamp nudges away from the post and slowly slides along the wire, illuminating the path in front of the two. Emilie follows the lamp, turning around to urge Videl to follow.

"Ah-no, no. I suppose I could've worded that better." Videl let out a dramatic sigh and shook his head. "I did not mean to offend. I meant that my experiments might seem a little...reckless? Baseless? Hmmm, not coming up with the right word here." Not that it was very important in the first place. Maybe a topic change was in order. "I don't know what will happen! As long as I don't lose another limb, right?" He laughed before trying to transition.

"So you're fascinated in engine work? What sort of engines? I suppose I could let you use some of the titanium. But.. I want to see this engine working before I wrap up my own experiments and head out." He teased and followed closely behind Emilie. The university certainly had quite the set up. Made him a tad jealous he didn't attend one himself. Maybe in a few decades if he ever grew tired of the pirate life. "I don't suppose this place does have any books on explosions or fireworks?"

Emilie laughed awkwardly with Videl when he joked about missing another limb. She was not sure how to respond without coming across offensive. But if the elf could make fun of himself, then he must be used to living without an arm. From what Emilie seen so far, Videl seemed to have no trouble functioning by himself. Staring at the suspended lamp that illuminated their way, she wondered if asking how the elf lost his arm would be okay. The mage had a hunch given that Videl hinted his experiments to be “reckless”. But before she thought any further of the matter, Videl asked more about her work.

“Oh yes! Engines, right. It’s a modified version of a proof-of-concept engine that dates-” she paused and twisted her head to Videl the moment after he asked to see her experiment working. “You really want to?! Oooh, it’ll be special because with the titanium, the engine will be strong enough to hold together and produce more power!” Down the path, a large warehouse emerged from the fields. When the crystal lamp stopped at the edge of the building, lamps above the barn-sized doors lit up.

“Here we are! My workspace is in here,” she walks up to a normal sized door built within the larger door to unlock it, “oh and I am sure that we have books on explosives, but the library is on the other side of the campus, away from the workshops. You probably can figure out why.” Once Emilie opened the door, the smell of worked metals and compounds blew out. The mage took a deep breath and contently sighed. After taking a step inside, buzzing sounds of electricity charges. Sparks then flickered in the ceiling, followed by a gradual illumination of the whole warehouse. Emilie was grinning through the whole process. “This never gets old!” The giddy mage turned to Videl,” So let’s get you settled down at my space. Watch your step around this place, people tends to expand their work area out here in the center row.” Emilie led Videl around miscellaneous parts and doodads lying on the floor and the occasional draped projects that other students left. On either side of them, the actual work spaces are just portable wooden walls dividing the wall space while leaving the cubical open. Each space probably had a desk; there’s no way of telling with the amount of stuff piled up.

When they finally arrived to her own space, Emilie gave a light gesture introducing her space. Everywhere around the workspace were boxes of parts tucked against the walls. Emile’s floor still had junk lying around but it much easier to walk through, minus a machine with many tubular elements that sat in the center of the space. In one corner of her space under a window was her desk with piles of paper and select parts. The other corned had a machine that looks similar to the one in the center of the space but was larger. The wooden wall next to Emile’s desk had technical drawings of various designs but the center machine. Emilie quickly moved boxes of parts to the floor to clear up space for a desk. “There we are, there should be enough space for us to work!”

"Like I said-" Videl smiled. "If I'm giving up some of my titanium I want to see what it's being used for." He hoped that didn't sound offensive at all. He tried to keep his tone rather playful. "I can't say I've had the honor of getting a close up look at an engine before. You'll have to explain it to me."

But wow, this place sure was nice. Videl glanced around at all the walls and then back at the field. Alright, definitely in a few decades or so he was paying this place another visit as a student. That could be real fun. Videl's awe was broken though as soon as Emilie commented on the books. "Oh. Well that makes sense, but that's quite a shame. I guess I'll just have to look at those books another time..." The elf's disappointment didn't last long, of course. It seemed Videl's default was upbeat and the smell of metals and compounds sure perked him up. Emilie's mood also contributed to his.

Off Videl bounced and maneauvered around the miscellaneous items once they'd both stepped inside, trying his best to avoid breaking anything important. Not that he understood half of it...it was even messier than the ship. Messier than taverns. Messier than...he couldn't think of another analogy. Videl nudged something out of his path with his foot then squeezed through after Emilie and right into her cubical. Huh, it sure was a lot more organized. Videl stopped to look at some of the drawings as Emilie cleared up space.

"...mind if I ask for a chair or something? Easier for me to work when all my limbs can reach the supplies." He flashed a smile, although he didn't sound nearly as playful as when he made jokes about his missing arm directly. Videl set down what he was carrying and waited on Emilie.

“Oh, a chair…” Emilie looked around her space, despite knowing there was no point in doing so, “all I have is a little stool, but I’m sure other students wouldn’t mind missing a chair for the night.” The stool was right next to the machine in the center of the space. It is too short to be used at a desk. Emilie scooted around the wooden wall, peeking into the cubical next to hers. Without hesitation, she went around and returned with a taller stool. “This should work fine!” She brought the stool over to Videl. “Also if you need any parts, I have lots to spare. Although I’m not sure if fireworks need much to begin with…oh unless you want some containers to hold everything together.” Emilie scanned the ground until something caught her eye. “Ah! This,” she picked up a tin can, “…could probably work!” Emilie wasn’t exactly sure if the can was something she picked up or actual trash, but gave it to Videl anyways. As long as it served a purpose, what the can was did not matter.

“And if it wasn’t so obvious yet, the thing right here in the middle is my engine.” She stepped and leaned back to give Videl a clearer view, jutting out her arms to complete her impromptu presentation, complete with an open smile. “Oh that’s right! You wanted to see this in action, didn’t you?” She clasped her hands together and started hopping. “Usually we are not supposed to test in here, but with its current state, it never caused any problems with its limits. But with proper reinforcements…” Emilie walked behind the engine, resting her hand on top of it as sat down on her short stool, “…I’ll be able to run this at full power! Test it outside of course. Anyways…let’s get started.”

She leaned over towards her desk to pull open a drawer, taking out metal-capped glass cylinders with crystals inside. She slotted the crystals in a compartment behind the engine that surrounded a wide container with all the tubing converging to its side. From the drawer, the mage carefully lifted out a metal box, setting it down in next to her. After putting on her gloves, she snapped her fingers then tapped them on the box, causing the box to unlock from the inside. Emilie daintily picked up the bright red crystal that was inside and placed it inside the container of the engine, sealing its lid. She looked up to Videl, remembering that he was there. “Oh sorry! I had to focus on handling the crystal, they are pretty pricy,” she twists some knobs and connected some piping, as she talked, “So those crystals in the glass, those are what powers everything… well for now, just one thing and that’s the red crystal I just put in. The power crystals give power to the red crystal and it produces heat and the whole thing will work!” She snaps some wiring to the power crystals twists the cylinders in place, causing them to glow blue. A few seconds after the power went on, the red crystal begins to pulse light within its chamber. “Power’s working…fire crystal stable…no leaks in the throttle control…Okay it takes a while to heat up so I’m going to have to do that manually to move along.” Emile places her gloved hand on top of the red crystal’s container. With her other hand, she quickly swipes with her palm on top of the resting hand, causing a flash of light and heat to radiate from under her hand. A gauge suddenly hissed, indicating a rapid increase in pressure. From inside the engine, the sound of cranking began but stopped soon after. Emilie got up from her stool to a makeshift control panel behind the engine and pushed a handle slightly up, with the engine responding with another long extended hiss. She walked around the front of the engine where an axle with a small propeller stuck out, giving it a spin. Finally the hissing pulsates and the propeller began to spin on its own. Within a few seconds, its speed seemed to top off, blowing a light breeze. “And that’s the engine running! Mind you its just a fraction of its full capacity.”
